"Today, I adopted a human. It broke my heart to see him so lost and alone. Then, suddenly, our eyes met—his were full of tears. I don't like the smell of sadness. I wanted so badly to jump on him. He spoke to me so gently, and in that moment, I knew: this human needed saving. I had to rescue him. So I barked with everything I had and followed him for blocks.

Eventually, I got close enough to sniff his hands. He smiled, just for a second. When he finally scooped me up, I felt the ice around his heart begin to melt. I pressed my face to his and felt his tears fall. I gazed into his eyes, and he answered with the brightest smile. I leapt into his arms, promising to be good, to love him forever, and never to leave his side.

What luck he had to walk down that street—and what luck I had to be there waiting.

So many people passed me by, wrapped up in their own lives, never even noticing. But not him. I'm glad no one else stopped.
