It was a hot day in May 2011 when my neighbor came over to tell me he had found a kitten in one of his old trucks. I walked over and found the saddest thing I've ever seen in the cab of that old Chevy.

It was a tiny, black kitten trying to mew and shake her head and she was covered in ants! I immediately started brushing the ants off her. She had 5 litter mates but they were all dead. Our vet's office closes at noon on Wednesdays and it was just before closing for them and I knew I wouldn't make it there in time with her so I called and got the recipe for homemade kitten milk.

I fed her a few drops here and there the rest of the day. She was weak and slept a lot. That night, I put her inside my night shirt on my chest to keep her warm. I woke to feed her every few hours just like with an infant and every time, I expected her to be dead but she wasn't.

She had made it through the night! I headed right for the vet with my little ball of black fuzz and they estimated her age at 3 weeks. She was malnourished, a little dehydrated and had a bad eye infection that required antibiotics.

I told my neighbor the day before that she'd be lucky if she lived through the night so when she did, I named her Lucky. I already had one cat, a 10 yr old spoiled, orange tabby named TomTom and he wasn't very fond of his new baby sister but he tolerated her antics until we lost him 6 months later. We still miss him but Lucky is our baby, a part of our family and is a very spoiled 3 year old!
